Preassembled bearing units from NKE – Easy to install, versatile combination options

NKE is presenting its range of ready-to-mount bearing units at this year’s international Motek Fair...

The housings of the bearing units are made from cast iron or pressed sheet steel and can be combined with a range of different bearing inserts. Having a high stiffness, cast iron housings are resistant against deformation and can therefore absorb moderate to high loads. For applications with lower loads, galvanised pressed sheet steel housings are available. These have a much lower weight than their cast counterparts and are exceptionally easy to install.

The bearing inserts consist of single-row deep groove ball bearings that are sealed on both sides against moisture, splash water and dust. Various seal types are available for different applications. The bearings are secured to the shaft with set screws or eccentric locking collars, which simplifies their installation. The bearings are factory lubricated and most bearing-housing combinations can be relubricated during operation to extend their service life. The special version SQ171 is coated for enhanced corrosion protection.

Through the spherical design of the bearings’ outer diameters and the housings’ inner diameter the units are self-aligning. This ensures that any misalignments that occur during installation or operation are compensated. NKE’s bearing units are interchangeable with products from leading manufacturers.

NKE produces standard and special bearings for all industrial applications. In addition to product development and application engineering NKE provides a full range of technical services and training. NKE’s products are distributed through 15 international representative offices and more than 240 distribution outlets in 60 countries.

Two new technical executives at NKE AUSTRIA

In April 2010, two new executives have joined Austrian bearing manufacturer NKE’s engineering team:...

Gunnar Simm studied aerospace engineering and was, for more than twenty years, responsible for application engineering and sales in various industrial sectors throughout the world at German bearing manufacturers INA in Herzogenaurach and FAG in Schweinfurt (now Schaeffler). Most recently he established the German subsidiary of the wind turbine bearing manufacturer ILJIN GmbH and worked as the company’s managing director. As the Head of Engineering at NKE, Gunnar Simm will structure and implement the growth and transformation process towards a stronger OEM business and a higher in-house production depth. This includes, in particular, the expansion of the consulting capacities for application engineering and employee qualification.
Bernhard Deffner studied general mechanical engineering at the Technical College of Karlsruhe and graduated with a doctorate degree in high-strength aluminium and titanium base alloys. During his 18 years at FAG he was responsible for product development for all standard manufacturing processes and finally as manager of production development for innovative solutions in the field of hard machining and automated assembly machinery. At NKE Bernhard Deffner will take on the project management for development of a hard machining production unit for small lot sizes. The new project aims to complete the commercial implementation of a greater manufacturing complexity and an associated knowledge transfer about the characteristics of rolling bearing production.
Technical managing director Harald Zerobin is enthusiastic about NKE’s new, highly-qualified technical managerial staff: “Both have extensive experience in the rolling bearing sector and represent a real enhancement in our company’s expertise.” NKE’s engineering department consists of four groups: Research and Development, Application Engineering, Technical Service, and Design. Totally 17 engineers, including three apprentices, work in this department.
With 180 employees at the headquarters in Steyr, NKE produces both standard and special bearings for all industrial applications. NKE’s core functions – engineering, product development, final processing of components, assembly, quality assurance, logistics, and sales and marketing – are centralised at its Steyr headquarters. In addition to product development and application engineering NKE provides a full range of technical services and training. NKE’s products are distributed through 15 international representative offices and more than 240 distribution outlets in 60 countries.

Large-size bearing from NKE ensures a smooth rolling process in steel pipe manufacturing

NKE AUSTRIA has supplied a special cylindrical roller bearing with an outer diameter of 3.3 m for...

The German company ESW Röhrenwerke manufactures seamless steel pipes that are used worldwide as structural tubes in machinery, steel constructions, in the automotive industry, as boiler tubes and as pipelines and supply lines for combustible liquids, gases and oil worldwide. 70.000 tonnes of steel pipes are produced each year in the three-roller planetary rolling mill process. This high-reduction technology at the world’s unique planetary rolling mill has made ESW one of the leading producers of seamless hot rolled steel pipes in particularly high qualities. The steel pipes are available in outer diameters of 70 mm to 244.5 mm and with a wall thickness of between 7.1 mm and 60 mm. Depending on the application and customer requirements, grades ranging from plain carbon steel to high alloy steel are processed.

To manufacture the pipes, up to 2 m long steel billets are heated up to rolling temperature in a rotary hearth furnace. After an initial hot rolling stage in the hollow block cross rolling mill, the hollow blocks are transported to the three-roller planetary rolling mill for the second stage of the forming process. Three rollers form the hollow block into a tube using a mandrel bar. While each roller rotates around its own axis, all three rollers also circulate around the rolled steel like planets. In the third stage of forming, the steel is then rolled out into finished pipes. The subsequent manufacturing steps are slow cooling, the subdivision into cooling bed lengths and adjustment of the pipes to ensure they are straight.

An essential component for the three-roller planetary rolling mill process is a large bearing that acts as the front support for the rolling head assembly. As ESW Röhrenwerke owns only one rolling mill, failure of the bearing presents a particularly high risk. Therefore a regular replacement of the bearing is required. When it became necessary to replace the bearing recently, ESW Röhrenwerke opted for a special bearing from NKE. The special cylindrical roller bearing with a solid steel cage has an outer diameter of 3.3 m and weighs 2.2 tonnes. The large bearing will be loaded with a supporting force of 76.3 tonnes and operates at a speed of 125 rpm; the supported rotating mass is around 200 tonnes. The oil lubrication is very low at 10 l/min. The special bearing has a service life of between six and eight years.
ESW Röhrenwerke already had very good experience in the past with NKE in terms of product quality. The critical factor in the decision to go with NKE was the fast availability of the large-size bearing. “NKE is a competent and reliable partner in bearing technology. The short lead times in the production of large-size bearings for our planetary inclined rolling mill was a major factor behind our decision on this project,” explains Lothar Schmitz, Head of Maintenance and Engineering at ESW.

Alongside large bearings for the rolling mill industry, NKE also develops customised special bearings for other high end applications. Examples include bearings for use in tidal current power stations, wind turbines and mining machinery.

NKE double row full complement cylindrical roller bearings – Locating bearings with maximum load carrying capacity, also under extreme operating conditions

Bearing manufacturer NKE AUSTRIA GmbH introduces the NNF series of double row full complement...

The maximum radial load carrying capacity of the NNF series cylindrical roller bearings is accomplished through the full complement design, i.e. a maximum number of rollers is fitted within the available crossection. They are suitable for low to medium speeds and can take up axial forces and tilting moments in both directions. To prevent dust and splash water from entering the bearings, the NNF series is equipped with contacting seals on both sides. A special grease allows the bearings to operate under extreme conditions. Lubrication holes in the outer and inner ring enable easy re-lubrication through shaft and housing.

Rope wheels and pulleys are typical application examples for NNF series double row full complement cylindrical roller bearings. Due to the narrower outer ring, additional sleeves or distance pieces are not required. Two snap ring grooves on the outer ring simplify the bearing arrangement design for sheaves. For better corrosion protection, the bearings are also available with a special, RoHS compliant anti-corrosion coating SQ171. Black oxide coating can also be realised to optimise the tribological characteristics of the bearings. Further more, the bearings can be manufactured in application specific clearance and tolerance classes.

The new works enable NKE to have more manufacturing depth, including a “small-lot production”, as well as more efficient logistics. „With the new works we can double our capacity and are significantly more flexible“, Heimo Ebner, NKE’s Managing Director highlights the benefits of the new plant. NKE has access to a total 35,000-square-metre lot in the industrial park Stadtgut Steyr and can hence secure long-term expansion plans. NKE will expand the workforce in Steyr from currently 180 people to about 230 in three to five years.

Due to the company’s fast expansion, the fourth extension on the old site in Steyr-Gleink was planned in 2007. However, considering the fact that the old location would pose certain limitations for the long-term development, NKE’s management decided to build a greenfield production plant in the industrial park Stadtgut Steyr. “Eventually the soft facts have been determining for Steyr”, says Heimo Ebner. “Seventy percent of our employees come from Steyr and the brand NKE is closely connected with Steyr.”

NKE AUSTRIA contributes to renewable energy by supplying bearings for marine current turbines

SeaGen, the world’s first commercial tidal current turbine in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough,...

Tidal current turbines are among the latest developments in renewable energy. Installed undersea, the turbines are driven by the tidal flow of water. Bearing manufacturer NKE Austria supplies the bearings for the gearboxes of these “underwater windmills”.

The 1.2 MW SeaGen tidal current turbine has been developed by leading tidal turbines technology developer Marine Current Turbines Ltd. (MCT) based in Bristol, United Kingdom. The turbine works much like an “underwater windmill”, but is driven by the tidal current rather than air. Unlike wind energy, which is subject to the random nature of the weather, tidal flows are much more predictable. Moreover, due to the higher density of water compared to air, underwater turbines do not need to be as large as wind turbines. SeaGen has been installed in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough and is the world’s first commercial tidal current turbine.

The SeaGen turbine’s gearbox has been designed by Orbital2 Ltd., a leading UK developer of renewable energy gearboxes and is being manufactured in the Czech Republic by Wikov MGI. The gearbox developers and manufacturers have selected NKE AUSTRIA to supply the bearings. Decisive in their choice were NKE’s excellent technical support and short production lead times. “NKE has been a capable and efficient partner in bearing technology. The availability of large main rotor shaft bearings is the decisive factor for this project”, said Dr. Frank Cunliffe, managing director of Orbital2.

NKE supplies nine different types of bearings for the gearboxes, including deep groove ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, cylindrical roller bearings and four-point contact ball bearings, with outer diameters from 300 to 1090 mm.

Besides bearings for tidal current turbines, NKE supplies bearings for other renewable energy sectors, especially wind energy.
Modular bearing system for planetary Wind turbine gearboxes

NKE AUSTRIA has developed a modular bearing system for planetary gears in wind turbine gearboxes....

Most wind turbines use gearboxes to transform the relatively low rotational speed of the main shaft into higher speeds required for power generation. Because the forces a modern wind turbine gearbox has to transmit are forever increasing while the gearbox itself has to remain compact, single- or two-stage planetary gearboxes are commonly used. The bearings of the planetary gears are among the highest-loaded in this specific application. In modern gearboxes an integrated planetary bearing arrangement is used, in which cylindrical roller bearings without an outer ring are fitted in the planetary gears, with the bore of the gear forming the outer raceway.

Modular systems of cylindrical roller bearings

The modular concept is based on single-row cylindrical roller bearings of the RN range, which do not have an outer ring. These bearings are equipped with a one-piece solid brass cage, which is guided by the inner ring (MPB). This cage features inspection grooves for endoscopic inspection of the inner raceways as standard.

These single row bearings can be assembled to sets of two, three or four bearings (see Fig.) to conform with the individual load and design parameters of a specific gearbox.

Ready-to-install bearing sets

NKE supplies ready-to-install matched bearing sets. The tightly toleranced overall height of each individual bearing and their precise matching of these ensures an even distribution of the radial loads. Each bearing set includes the components required to secure the bearings axially in the planetary gears – such as retaining rings and loose rib rings. If required, the overall width of each bearing set can be adapted to the operating conditions and the available space with spacer rings fitted between the individual bearings.

Numerous advantages

Used consistently throughout the gearbox assembly, the modular concept has numerous advantages for the user: the designs of planetary bearings can be simplified; the bearing design can be standardised for the first and second gear stage and across various gearbox sizes; the required number of bearing variants is reduced; the modular design simplifies the adaptation of bearing set characteristics to the requirements of each gear stage; the one-piece solid brass cage provides excellent rolling element guidance even during rapid acceleration; and the lubrication grooves provided as standard improve the lubrication of the planetary gear bearings.

Each bearing set is packaged as a unit and is marked to prevent inadvertent swapping of matched components within each set. All sets are subjected to a stringent quality inspection of their functional characteristics before leaving NKE’s factory in Steyr.

Beside rolling bearings for wind turbine gearboxes, Austrian bearing specialist NKE develops and produces standard and special bearings for all industrial applications and provides product development, application engineering and a full range of technical, consulting, documentation and training services. NKE’s products are distributed through 15 international representative offices and more than 240 distribution outlets in 60 countries.

Another outstanding year for NKE – 87 percent sales growth and 50 new jobs

NKE AUSTRIA reported another outstanding year: Sales hit 43.3 million euro in 2008, up 87 percent...

87 percent growth and 50 new jobs

To cope with the rapid growth, NKE started building new headquarters in the Stadtgut Steyr industrial park in July 2008. Twelve million euros will be invested in the new office and production facilities, which will have a total floor space of 10.000 square metres (ca. 110.000 square feet) and are scheduled for completion in May 2009.

The company recruited 50 new employees in 2008, upping its workforce to its current level of about 170. The goal of a 10 percent share of apprentices has been realised by taking on seven additional apprentices. To ensure effective training and ease skills shortages in the long run, an apprentice workshop was established in cooperation with Austrian vocational training institute BFI.

Awards as recognition

In December 2008 NKE won an award in the “Women’s Advancement Initiative” in Austria. With 40 percent women in the workforce, the bearing manufacturer lies far above the industry average, also on the management level: four of the nine department heads are female. To help its female employees find a balance between job and family, NKE offers flexible working hours and will, in Summer 2009, introduce a holiday childcare service.

NKE was also awarded the innovation prize “Schrittmacher 08”, impressing the jury with its innovative tailored solutions for different industries. In the past 12 months, the company has developed 375 custom bearing solutions.

Positive outlook for 2009

Despite the difficult current economic environment, NKE has a positive outlook for 2009, as NKE’s commercial Managing Director Heimo Ebner explains: “We started the new year with a full order book, which will even take us some way into 2010. Growth potential exists especially in renewable energy, for example wind energy, and infrastructure, such as railways. As part of our expansion drive we are this year for the fifth time exhibiting at the Hannover Industrial Fair.”

Solid brass bearing cages from NKE – new cage design reduces moving mass

Bearing specialist NKE Austria introduces a new generation of solid brass bearing cages with an...

In bearings that operate at high speeds, the force created by the rolling elements’ moving mass causes a significant additional internal load. Especially in cylindrical roller bearings with relatively heavy solid brass cages, the acceleration of the rolling elements requires a large amount of energy.

A further issue directly associated with the mass inertia of rollers and cage is the sliding friction that frequently occurs in rolling bearings that are insufficiently loaded or accelerated too quickly and which, in extreme cases, can destroy the bearing’s precision-finished raceway surfaces.

Less is more

With the aim of reducing moving mass, engineers of NKE’s design department have comprehensively revised the existing standard solid brass cage design as part of a design review process.

“We wanted to substantially reduce cage mass without compromising the proven technical characteristics of our solid brass cages”, explains Johann Bergmayr, team leader in NKE’s Technical Service department.

“By fully utilising the available weight-savings potential, we were able to cut cage mass by nearly a fifth compared to the previous design without affecting its roller guidance accuracy”, emphasises Faruk Duskunovic, leader of the NKE design team and responsible for the technical implementation of the idea. “At the same time an optimisation of the cage bar cross-sections has resulted in an improved lubricant distribution in the bearing.”

In line with NKE’s philosophy of ongoing product development, the improved cage design will be gradually phased in for all of NKE’s standard bearings with solid brass cages.

NKE produces standard and special bearings for all industrial applications. In addition to product development and application engineering NKE provides a full range of technical services and training.
A long service life is a key criterion for rolling bearings used in traction motors. The most commonly used bearing types for this application are cylindrical roller bearings, deep groove ball bearings and electrically insulated rolling bearings, which are available as hybrid bearings or with a coated outer or inner ring.

Gearbox bearings run at high speeds and are exposed to significant loads. In addition they must endure shocks, vibrations and extreme temperatures. The bearing types used most commonly here are cylindrical roller bearings, tapered roller bearings, angular contact ball bearings, four-point contact ball bearings and deep groove ball bearings.

In addition to a comprehensive range of rolling bearings for traction motors and gearboxes NKE provides commercial and technical support, including application consulting, development and design, calculation, testing and logistic services. Frequently NKE manufactures tailored rolling bearings for railway applications to customer specifications.
Due to the company’s fast expansion, the bearing manufacturer NKE AUSTRIA had started planning for the fourth extension on the existing site last year. However, considering the fact that the current location would pose certain limitations for the long-term development, NKE’s management decided to act according to the company’s motto “more possibilities” and to build a completely new production plant on the greenfield. After intensive negotiations with neighbouring communities and the city Steyr, NKE found a suitable lot of land in the industrial park Stadtgut Steyr.

Outstanding annual results for NKE AUSTRIA

Sales increase of 63 percent – 30 new employees –
10 million euro for expansion of Steyr site

Steyr-based bearing manufacturer NKE AUSTRIA GmbH achieved outstanding annual results in 2007. With sales of 23.1 million euro, NKE’s turnover was up 63 percent over the previous year. The main areas of growth were in the wind energy, gearbox and agricultural machinery sectors, with wind energy alone contributing orders worth several million euros.

At its head office in Steyr, NKE has created 30 new jobs in 2007, including three new managerial positions – for Procurement Logistics, Quality Management and Environmental Management as well as Project Management. The company now has 130 employees and plans to create another 30 positions per year over the next two years. NKE’s international sales network has also been extended, with two new representatives, one in the United Kingdom and one in Italy.

2007 also saw the introduction of a new ERP system, which has helped boost productivity and service efficiency. Investments were also made in Production and Quality Assurance, especially in relation to large size bearings with a diameter of up to two metres.

Bearing manufacturer NKE plans to extend its Steyr site from its existing floorspace of 4 600 square metres to 11 600 square metres, of which 8 200 square metres will be for production and warehousing. The cost of the expansion is an estimated ten million euros.

For 2008, NKE AUSTRIA aims to further extend its customer base and the global sales network, as well as increasing employee satisfaction.

Special bearing unit from NKE reduces costs for agricultural machine manufacturer

NKE Austria GmbH has developed a special bearing unit for a cutter tine rotor of a power harrow for...

The Lemken’s Zirkon 10 power harrow was previously designed with a standard deep groove ball bearing. A radial oil seal running on the inner race of a needle roller bearing and a felt seal in a metal housing were arranged next to the deep groove ball bearing. Each of these four components had to be handled and fitted separately. The objective of the new design was to reduce the costs.

NKE proposed a unit in which the external seals were already integrated in the bearing. Based on a standard deep groove ball bearing 6212, the resulting bearing features an RS synthetic rubber seal on one side, a radial oil seal between the outer and inner races as well as a felt seal with a metal cap on the other. The design changes required from Lemken were minimal: only one snap ring groove had to be relocated. Thanks to the new design, only a single part has to be purchased and fitted now instead of the four components previously required.

The special bearing was developed by NKE in cooperation with Lemken’s design engineers. Before its use in serial production, a sample batch was field tested for about a year.
Dr. Franz-Georg von Busse, CEO of Lemken, commented on the cooperation with NKE: “We appreciate the expertise and competence of our contacts at NKE, their flexibility in dealing with fluctuating demand and solving technical problems and not least the good price/performance ratio.”

NKE’s bearing solutions for Lemken and other agricultural machine manufacturers are designed to withstand the adverse conditions – mud, rain, dust, impact loads and corrosion – to which these machines are routinely subjected.

NKE develops large-size bearings for mining industry

NKE AUSTRIA supplies large-size bearings for a Central American ore dressing plant. When...

Because the bearings originally used in the ore dressing plant are no longer available from their manufacturer, a replacement for these custom bearings had to be found. The new large-size bearings were required to absorb high thrust loads at low speeds. To allow an easy installation, the bearing rings were to be made from several sections.

For use in the ore dressing plant, NKE developed full complement thrust ball bearings with an external diameter of 2540 mm. In the original version, the two bearing rings were split into six sections each; the rings of NKE’s new large-size bearings consist of only three segments. This has the advantage of reducing the time needed for installation as well as increasing the mechanical rigidity of the bearing bushes and cutting the number of joints to reduce the load on the material. While their external geometry and mounting dimensions remain unchanged, the bearings’ internal structure has been optimised to enhance their static loading capacity compared to the original bearings.

Beside the mining industry, NKE develops and produces standard and special bearings for all industrial applications. NKE’s products are distributed through 14 international representative offices and more than 240 distribution outlets in over 55 countries.

New POP range deep groove ball bearings - quiet running and precise

NKE introduces its new range of single row deep groove ball bearings. As one of the most...

The new NKE deep groove ball bearings are subject to stringent, documented quality inspections as well as 100 percent noise testing, which helps ensure their high precision and quiet operation. The low running noise is achieved through the use of a new type of lubricant, which also minimizes the bearing’s starting torque even at low operating temperatures. The lubricant has a long service life over a wide temperature range – from minus 50 to plus 150 degrees Celsius. The bearings feature a pair of newly developed double-lipped labyrinth seals, which provide better protection from contamination and improve grease retention in spite of the low friction. The bearings’ raceways have an enhanced surface finish, which reduces wear and keeps the operating temperature low. Their high-grade balls ensure smooth running and reduced noise compared to conventional deep groove ball bearings.

The new POP range of single row deep groove ball bearings is available from stock in the size ranges 6000 to 6012, 6200 to 6212 and 6300 to 6310 (with bore diameters from 10 mm to 60 mm or 50 mm), in open version, 2RS2 version (sealed with two synthetic rubber seals) and 2Z version (sealed with two steel shields) and with clearances CN (standard) and C3. Other versions and sizes are available on request.

NKE supplies bearings for gearboxes of wind turbines

NKE AUSTRIA GmbH has received two orders for bearings for the gearboxes of wind turbines. Two...

Comprehensive technical advice and excellent cost effectiveness were the factors that prompted the gearbox manufacturers to choose NKE. "We work closely with our customers: from technical calculation through certification to product development, our customers can count on our expertise and flexible, unbureaucratic cooperation", explains Heimo Ebner, managing director of NKE. "The wind energy sector is of strategic importance for us: in Germany alone, the total added value in the wind turbine sector increased by 28 percent in 2005."

Rolling bearings for wind turbines present a special challenge for bearing manufacturers. The operating conditions inside the plants are complex and demanding on components, yet the bearings must work efficiently and reliably. A high quality and long lifespan are vital to prevent failures and the resulting downtimes and costs of repairs or replacements.

The bearings from NKE used in the turbine gearboxes have outside diameters of up to 820 mm. The bearing types used include deep groove ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, full complement cylindrical roller bearings, spherical roller thrust bearings, taper roller bearings and special taper roller bearings.

New NKE series single row cylindrical roller bearings

NKE AUSTRIA introduces its new series of single row cylindrical roller bearings. The salient...

The new roller bearings are available in 164 sizes in design variants NU, NJ and NUP. The bearing cages are available in roller-guided and outer ring-guided versions and are made from brass and polyamide. In addition to radial clearance groups CN (C0) for as standard, C3 and C4 groups are also available. Special versions, for example traction motor bearings (SQ1), wheel set bearings (SQ2) and electrically insulated bearings (SQ77) are available at short lead times.

To maximise their lifespan, the new cylindrical roller bearings are made from clean bearing steel. The superior surface finish of the raceways further helps reducing friction as well as lowering the operating temperature. The optimised geometries of raceways and rolling elements increase the loading capacity, while a modified cage design improves the formation of lubricant film. Thanks to the improved design of bearing guiding flanges for NJ and NUP variants, the bearings can take up higher axial loads. Misalignments can be compensated by modified contact geometry and crowned inner raceways. Tighter tolerances for the roller sorting ensure a uniform load distribution.

In addition to these numerous technical benefits, the new cylindrical roller bearings feature optimum operational reliability and maximum cost effectiveness. All NKE bearings are subjected to stringent quality procedures and are tested using state-of-the-art procedures and equipment. The Steyr site is certified to ISO 9001:2000 (design, development, production and distribution of bearings) and ISO 14001. In recognition of the exceptional quality of NKE’s products, the company was awarded the prestigious Austria Quality Seal earlier this year.

Taking the bull by the horns – ÖBB’s Taurus high-performance locomotive runs with NKE hybrid bearings

The transformer oil pumps in Austrian national railway company ÖBB’s Taurus high-performance...

Taurus high-performance locomotive
The Taurus high-performance locomotive is one of Austrian railway operator ÖBB’s flagships. Assembled by ÖBB-Technische Services GmbH (TS) – a subsidiary of ÖBB – in the Taurus Center in the Austrian city of Linz, the Taurus is currently “Europe’s most powerful and fastest high-performance locomotive”, according to ÖBB sources.

The 1016 and 1116 series two-system high-performance locomotives are used mainly for main-line passenger and for heavy goods transports. Thanks to its newly developed high-speed bogeys with their performance drivetrain and brake shaft (HAB), the Taurus reaches top speeds of 230 km/h (140 mph). Each of the locomotive’s bogeys is supplied by one current converter. An oil-cooled transformer arranged under floor supplies the current converters with the required propulsion power. Each of the transformer’s cooling circuits contains two oil pumps that keep the oil circulating. An auxiliary consumer converter supplies the oil pumps with electrical energy.

NKE hybrid bearings prevents passage of electrical currents
Especially during starting, the simultaneous operation of auxiliary converter and oil pump can cause an excessive current flow through the pump’s bearings. This problem was identified by maintenance contractors ÖBB-Technische Services and was confirmed by the experienced engineers from the bearing supplier NKE. To prevent the adverse current passage, the oil pumps were to be fitted with different bearings with ceramic rolling elements that provided a complete electrical isolation.

NKE impressed with technical competence and promptness
The choice fell on hybrid bearings from Austrian-based bearing manufacturer NKE AUSTRIA GmbH. NKE impressed right from the start, with its fast submission of an offer and model selection, and the provision of samples for technical trials. The short delivery time and cost effectiveness were also the decisive advantages. In the course of routine maintenance work on the 332 locomotives at the Taurus-Center in Linz and the other ÖBB Service locations, the oil pumps are removed and their existing bearings replaced with electrically insulating angular contact ball bearings and deep groove ball bearings from NKE. The rolling elements of the new bearings are made from insulating oxide ceramic material. Ceramic rolling elements have a theoretically infinite electrical resistance and therefore effectively prevent any current passage.

Other applications for electrically insulated bearings
Beside hybrid bearings – bearings with ceramic rolling elements – electrically insulated bearings are also available with an oxide ceramic insulating layer on the bearing’s outer race. The ceramic layer is applied to the outer race through thin-film plasma spraying. The insulation has a guaranteed dielectric strength of at least 1000 V direct or alternating voltage.
Electrically insulated ball bearings are also used in other applications, for example in traction motors. NKE supplies electrically insulated bearings in standard sizes with outer diameters from 80 to 400 mm as well as custom sizes to order. The electrically insulated bearings are available in a range of designs. As their load ratings, key dimensions and tolerances are identical with those of the normal bearings, they can be easily substituted for the standard bearings in existing installations or new designs. Electrically insulating bearings provide excellent protection from bearing damage through flashover and are therefore much more reliable in operation than their conventional counterparts.

2005: another successful year at NKE AUSTRIA

NKE AUSTRIA concluded the year 2005 with huge successes: a sales growth of 25.6%, a strengthened...

Sales growth by 25.6%
In 2005 NKE AUSTRIA achieved a year-on-year sales growth of 25.6%. “While the sales from existing customers increased significantly, our consistent development of new markets has also contributed the remarkable growth. India, Chile, Estonia and Ukraine are examples of the nine new markets we developed in 2005,” explained Heimo Ebner, NKE’s Managing Director. In fact, the annual sales growth has never been lower than 20% since the company’s establishment.

Strengthened team
To cope with the rapid growth, NKE has been constantly strengthening its team. In 2005, 15 new employees were recruited for the Steyr headquarters, in engineering, sales, production and special projects. Five representatives were added for markets of Austria, Germany, India and Russia. (For a full list of NKE representative offices, please click here.)

Doubled production facilities
The second phase extension of the Steyr site was completed in September 2005. With the newly constructed 1,600-square-metre hall, NKE’s production capacity has been further enhanced, especially in cylindrical roller bearings. Currently the Steyr site consists of 4,600 square metres of building area, including 3,200 square metres for production and warehouse. (More about the extension at "NKE starts construction of a new production hall".)

Extended product offer
NKE has also been expanding its product range. In the past year, many product ranges were expanded and introduced as stock items – e.g. deep groove ball bearings with brass cages, electrically insulated bearings, four-point contact ball bearings, IKOS, support rollers, and cylindrical roller bearings. For special applications, NKE also developed and manufactured numerous non-standard bearings for customers in various industries, such as agricultural machinery, heavy machinery, steel mills, gear boxes, pumps, electrical motors and railways.
“2006 marks the tenth anniversary of NKE Bearings. We would like to thank all our loyal customers and partners for their support over the years! For the coming years, our focus will still be customer service, production and quality assurance,” said Heimo Ebner.

Huge success at Hannover Industrial Fair

At the Stand in Hall 22, NKE presented some remarkable applications for customers in different industries. For example:

Pumps – Modular bearing arrangements developed for Weir Pumps UK save production and maintenance costs.

Railways – Special and standard bearing solutions for traction motors and gear boxes developed for Bombardier Transportation UK reduce/eliminate bearing breakdowns.

Agricultural machinery – A special double-row angular contact ball bearing developed for Lemken Germany improves bearing life expectancy and offers better protection against contamination.

“This is NKE’s third time at the Hannover Fair, and so far the most successful one. It has significantly enhanced our image as a premium-class bearing manufacturer with strong technical competence,” said Harald Zerobin, NKE’s Joint Managing Director. “We have in fact won numerous projects against bigger players, thanks to our technical support, customer proximity and prompt reaction.”

NKE develops bearing unit for pump applications

In collaboration with a large pump maker, NKE has developed a new modular system for the bearing...

The original objective was the rationalisation of a complete pump family. Therefore a module of twelve different sizes for fixed and non-locating bearing positions should be developed. A very important requirement was to ensure easy mounting and dismounting of the bearing unit on the shaft and the pump casing without the need of special mounting instruments. The bearing unit should also be protected against splash water and ensure a maintenance-free period of three years without additional lubrication. NKE succeeded in developing a bearing arrangement composed of six components which met all the customer’s requirements. For the whole pump family consisting of 48 different models, only 21 different types of angular contact ball bearings and deep groove ball bearings were used.

A special challenge was the development of the bearing unit for high performance pump models. on the locating bearing position, pairs of angular contact ball bearings were applied in order to resist high loads and to guarantee a long service life. Instead of individual installation, NKE found a solution to mount the bearing pairs into the pumps as entire units.
The advantages of this new bearing unit are easy mounting and simple handling, due to the deployment of one component instead of several single parts. This also simplifies the spare part service. Thanks to lifetime lubrication the maintenance costs are virtually eliminated. The rationalisation of the bearing arrangements also decreases production costs. This system is so well accepted by the end customers that NKE’s partner is planning to covert all types of pumps to this new modular system.

NKE purchased the latest systems from Mitutoyo, a renowned provider of measurement equipment. The instruments included a microscope, a linear height measurement machine, a roundness instrument, a contour and roughness instrument, a CNC coordinate measuring system, and a hardness testing machine. These, in addition to the existing equipment, ensure that every single batch of bearings delivered to NKE’s customer is of the highest quality standards.

NKE’s quality management system is also ISO 9001:2000 certified.
